KENNETT SQUARE, PA
This year we will be holding the FBICC Region 1 Meeting in Kennett Square, PA, in the heart of historic Chester County’s Brandywine Valley. Known as the Mushroom Capital of the world, the area is rich with museums, horticultural gems such as Longwood Gardens, wineries and antique shops. The only thing that we will be short on will be time. Our hotel and most attractions are just off Route 1, approximately 45 minutes from Philadelphia International Airport.
Come join your flow blue friends for a fun-filled weekend on Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 3, 2021, at the Hilton Garden Inn – Kennett Square, 815 E. Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square PA 19348. Amenities include a restaurant, fitness center, indoor pool, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. Other amenities include a bar with a seating area off the main lobby area that allows for comfortable visiting with club members later in the evening.
FRIDAY EVENING DINNER:
At 6pm, we will gather for dinner at La Verona Italian Cuisine & Bar, 114 E. State Street, Kennett Square PA 19348. I have reserved a private room on the first floor of the restaurant. Dinner is not included in the registration fee – please see the registration form for meal selection details. Beth Keats, president of the West Chester Railroad Heritage Association, will be joining us for dinner and will give a presentation on the history of the WC Railroad and Kennett Square.
Saturday morning our meeting begins at 9am with table sales, a presentation by Barbara Kamerance, entitled POT LIDS, JARS, FLASKS AND PLAQUES-COMMERCIALISM IN COLOR, the always-popular show and tell, and an auction to benefit the FBICEF. The meeting will adjourn at approximately 12pm. Lunch will be served in our meeting room and the cost is included in the registration fee.
Donations for Region 1 2022 Convention Basket
I know it’s early, however I want to start to collect items to make up the Region 1 basket which is raffled on Saturday of the Convention. Items that represent your state, a piece of flow blue or mulberry, or a gift card to a local food attraction are some ideas. I can also accept donations that will be pooled to purchase an item for the basket. The proceeds go to the Educational Committee. Regions always vie for the most desirable basket so, let’s see what we can do.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON – Longwood Gardens Visit:
Time: 1:30 – 4:30pm; Attendees will drive a short distance to this horticultural gem known as Longwood Gardens. This is one of my favorite stops in Kennett Square and it never fails to be a source of wonder and peace when I walk the gardens and conservatory. The gardens are the legacy of Pierre du Pont who rescued the Peirce arboretum from loggers when the family’s heirs tired of maintaining it and the many specimen trees planted there by George Peirce and sons from 1700 – 1906. There is a lovely cafeteria to grab a coffee and snack to enjoy on the outside patio or by the inside fireplace when your feet tire. The original Peirce farmhouse with Pierre’s addition is opened to visit and a running video of the history of Longwood Gardens plays every half hour in a seated area. The gardens also boast a lovely store with local artists’ creations, books, and of course, plants. Scooters and wheelchairs are available on a first come basis and payment is by donation. All areas of the gardens are handicap accessible.
Sunday – West Chester Historic Train Ride:
For those staying a second night (and I encourage you to consider it), it will be “All Aboard” the historic West Chester Railroad for a fall foliage train ride from West Chester to the historic Glen Mills Railroad Station and back again. We may be disembarking the train to explore the train station and enjoy lunch at Byrsa Bistro. The train leaves the station at 12pm and the trip could take up to 2 hours if stopping or 90 minutes if we just do a round trip.
